Hi Frank, That a funny story, except for the part about the kids with the flu! Looking forward to seeing your video posted. Duke

Duke, I'm sitting on a flight listening to Duke's Blues and occasionally I blurt out in laughter because the playing is just.... Ridiculous!! The guy sitting next to me thinks I'm nuts. Love Slipped In swings so hard.
Anyway, just want you to know I will post a video at some point, but between work travel and kids "dying with the flu" I have not had time to devote this week.
Mike, great suggestion on singing the parts. I find that helps me open up the fretboard to play notes and phrases I'm not used to because my hands have muscle memory thatlimits me but my ear does not.
Peace, Frank

Thanks Duke.
Sorry to be a "slow" student, but I like this groove and want to get it right.
Cheers

Hi Peter, I will go over it in my lesson tomorrow for you and try to explain it more clearly. Thanks, Duke

Hi Peter ... this is a hard one. An idea for you that I see Jerry doing with his harp students
Step 1 ... Before you try and play it, listen to the section 10 times in a row (until it is stuck in your head ... like "Happy Birthday" or "Jingle Bells" likely is). Duke and Corey also mention this on and off through their lessons and comments (i.e. the important of getting the music in your mind).
Step 2 ... Sing the guitar part over and over again with Duke's example and then without. The idea here is to separate your internalizing the riff / melody from your ability to play it on the guitar. I notice Corey often suggests this at times too. Note: you don't have to be a good singer in terms of tone. The two important parts are timing and hearing the pitches in your head.
Step 3 ... Pick up the guitar and try to play it now that the music is in your mind AND you can sing the phrasing.
Hope that help!

Bah! The numbers and the v ^ did not line up. The v marks should be on the beat, and the ^ between.

Hey Duke, quick question before I try again.
I'm trying to understand which notes are on the beat, and which are between. I believe when you say "anticipated" you mean "before the beat"
This is what I hear:
If you were strumming the Boogaloo rhythm, so your hand is going down on the beat, and up between, the pattern would look like this...
v v . ^ . v . . ^ v ^
1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4
So v notes are on the beat, and ^ are anticipated.
When you say the 4th note is anticpated, does that mean I should play
v v . ^ . ^ . . . ^ v ^
1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4
Many thanks, it is so hard to describe rhythm in text. Hope my question is clear.

Hi Peter, You are very cloes on playing the head. You just need to work on getting up to speed on it but it's a very good start! On your track the bass on the forth note you play should be anticipated also each time. That may throw you off a bit so I would suggest you re-cut the bass so you can get a more correct feel to play with. It's a very good start and you have the melody notes right so you just need to keep on keepin on!

Hi Duke, answering your challenge. It's lame, but here it is:
I'm still working on groking the Boogaloo groove, so I created my own backing track. I hoped that by trying to emulate the bass and drums on your recording, I'd get a better understanding.
In keeping with our other discussion in "How to practice soloing" I'm trying to do this all by ear. So the head is not quite right, and the solo is only vaguely related to your lesson.
I fell like I learned something doing this, and I hope I caught the spirit of Boogaloo.
Thanks

Hi Mattia, Very good! I hear you are picking up some of the riffs and executing them quite well. Now, for this style I would try playing with an easier touch with your picking hand and maybe try using less vibrato on your left hand. That way is will be smother and swing more. In this paticular style the vabrato is not needed so much although you certainly entitled to your own interpretation of it all. Good job!, Duke

You deserve the kudos Duke :) !
I've seen the guitar JWmurphy guitar hope i'll can try one one day in Fenton ! The one you use with your jazz trio is awesome (by the way your drummer too ! Mark ride's drive his incredible and Brad Hallen groove's too of course !).
I wanted to tell you that i also teach to my student all the things between the notes you tell in your lesson when i came to blues guitar with them. I put one chicago bues in E in my french guitar method (because i want rocker to play blues !) and now i have a lot of story about string gauge, quickchange "error" on second measure (cf the chicago lesson with brad) and many things like that. And of course i quote you and tell about Sonic Junction and tell your youtube video.
It's incredible to learn from you and Corey and exchange with you !
Hope you'll come to France soon
Greetings
JD

Duke and Corey - I'm recent to the site - enjoying very much - ways to go before I record but will keep at it - you guys are great - Suggestion for a future session: "Walkin' and Talkin'" by Alex Schultz off his "Think About It" CD - PS: Duke - remembering your sessions in Schenectady NY a long time ago!
